Video game technology helps teach guitar

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Learning to play guitar couldn't be more fun when using a new video game technology based program.

Gabriel Smith, CEO of Legacy Learning Systems, came up with the concept of Guitarapprentice.com after seeing people excel in games like guitar hero. He thought, "Why not take that concept and teach people guitar?"

Trenton Swartzentruber, Guitarapprentice.com instructor told Nashville's News 2, "You don't have to learn all the chords in their most extreme levels; you can just play one of two of the notes at a time of the cord and as you move up we'll start adding more cords and more of the notes of the cords, so you're finally playing the whole song."

Instead of a controller, players use their own guitar.

The player gets to rock out to hit songs by playing only a few chords. As they move up through the different levels, they learn and play more of the guitar part. By the time they reach the highest level, they're playing the entire song.

"That's the whole idea. When you're playing the song at the full speed, you're actually playing the song as is," Swartzentruber said. "You're actually learning the skills that it takes to get to that level and once you're at that level you're actually playing the whole song."

Players need an electric of acoustic guitar, but no experience is necessary.

"We really hope they find it as addictive as we have and end up learning guitar because they're having so much fun playing this," Smith said.

Guitarapprentice.com is offering a free trial that can be downloaded on their Web site.
